I love parties simply because it’s a perfect excuse to design, decorate and be creative. For Lena’s first birthday, I went a tad bit overboard decorating our house with all things mermaid related. I designed the invites, created special drink labels, bought a handmade mermaid outfit from Etsy, sewed streamers together for hours on end… the list goes on. So for her second birthday, I had grand plans for another creative soiree involving Mary Poppins and a proper tea party. However, once we confirmed we were celebrating in North Carolina, my plans came to a halt and I realized it wasn’t going to be worth the hassle. So I whipped up a quick invite to email out to all our NC family and friends and made peace with the fact that the decorations wouldn’t go any further than streamers and balloons.
The Diva loves nothing more than to run, jump and play with her friends, so we rented the local tumble gym for an hour and let the kids run wild. We are blessed to have an amazing community of both friends and family who love Lena as if she was their own. Despite many of them not having young children, everyone came out to watch the birthday girl show off her gymnastics moves. The seating area of the gym was packed and I can’t help but get a little emotional looking back at the photos of all these people we care about so much. They dropped everything to come celebrate our little girl and we could not be more grateful or feel more loved by everyone!
After wearing the kids out, we headed back to the Carlsson’s for snacks, cake and presents. It was extremely low key – we just had some fruit and veggie trays with chips and dip. Since we don’t let Lena eat sweets, she doesn’t have a taste for cake but the one time we let her try out ice cream, she absolutely LOVED it. So we decided to go with a store-bought ice cream cake (I’m so ashamed) but the birthday girl loved it and that’s what the day was about. She’s such a little ham and loves to be the center of attention so she was very much in her element with all the cameras and cheering while she blew out the candle.
Knowing we had limited space in our suitcases, the gifts we got were incredibly thoughtful and sweet. Plenty of clothes (my favorite), toys that could be played with on the plane and some keepsake items that we will keep for years to come. Initially, I felt a bit guilty for not putting more time and effort into the munchkin’s birthday, but it ended up being absolutely perfect. We got a chance to visit with all the people we care about and Lena was able to play with all her friends and cousins.
Happy 2nd Birthday to my little Nay-Nay kid. Lena, you are more loved than you will ever know and not just by your mama and daddy, but by a whole bunch of people all over the world. You are smart, strong, and absolutely hilarious. I love that you are eager to share because it shows me you have a kind heart. I am proud of how easily you handle all the transitions that our family has been through in your short two years of life. You’re my little traveling companion, castle explorer and big toy conqueror. At the rate we’re going, you may nurse until you’re 15 but that’s fine because it is keeping you happy, healthy and secure. My favorite part of the day is when we get ready for bed – reading Goodnight Moon; Ten, Night, Eight; and your Bible; watching you do “praying hands” and hearing your little voice say “amen” after we pray, and snuggling up as you fall asleep. You have an insatiable need to touch mama’s skin while sleeping, swipe any iPhone that’s near you, and show off all the animal sounds you’ve learned. I feel like the luckiest mama in the whole world because I get to spend my days with you – laughing, dancing, playing and laughing some more. I love you so very much my little angel girl. Gratulerer med 2 års dagen!
