Medieval churches and magical forests

Day 2 of Carlsson’s European Vacation

I’ve written before about the Ely cathedral and how stunningly beautiful it is. Since it was a Sunday, we decided to drive to Ely and attend the Sunday morning service at the cathedral. Somehow, we messed up the time (big surprise there, I had numerical confusion) and arrived after the service had started. We asked the attendant if we could sit in the back but I think he misunderstood and thought we just wanted to take photos during the service. So we turned around and decided to take photos of the outside instead. The history of this church dates back to the 600’s which is just mind boggling to me. There is really nothing like this in the States so it’s one of my favorite places to bring visitors.

We made the guys stop and pose for pictures – one of their favorite activities. I love that they’re in the exact same pose in this one. What a couple of lovebirds.

Lena decided she’d had enough of the picture taking and let us know by screaming and imitating a wet noodle every time we tried to pick her up. So we stopped to give her a snack. Here you can see us engaging in my second favorite activity: refusing to eat the food I offer her. She is such a creature; even if it’s her favorite food, she will adamantly refuse the first three bites before even considering eating whatever it is I’m offering.

Since Ely was a bit of a bust thanks to my inability to read a schedule, we decided to visit Anglesey Abbey next.

I love this picture of Jason and Dustin. They were both in the process of giving us their best Top Model pose but we caught the tail end of it so it actually looks like a natural photo. For two guys who normally get super awkward at the sight of a lens, they did pretty well here.

We stopped for more photos at the birch clearing since I like to pretend I’m a fancy photographer and know what I’m doing. As you can see, I’m much better behind the camera than in front of it. This is pretty much the story of my life – Lena and I having a struggle over the activity at hand and Jason just laughing at us. Just keeping it real.

Also, this photo is simultaneously hilarious and horrifying to me. Normally, we go out of our way to make sure we don’t wear matching clothes as the mere thought of doing so makes me nauseous. However, it looks like we purposely played twinsies in this photo then you add in the smooch and it’s all kinds of mushy gushy. We were actually trying to freak Melissa out here. She can’t stand when couples feed each other so we do it as often as possible in her presence. Since we didn’t have any food to share, we thought this would be the next best thing. Just be glad there’s no audio 😉

Despite visiting numerous times, I’ve found something new on each walk through the grounds at Anglesey. The back of Lord Fairhaven’s house is really stunning and there are huge rolling fields to explore or picnic upon. Lena was shrieking with laughter as we took turns chasing her – it’s possibly the cutest thing I’ve ever heard.

The sky was looking dark and grey, so we finished up by visiting the Wildlife Discovery area. I think this might be the coolest kids area I’ve ever seen because it feels like something out of a movie. Kids are encouraged to leave their mark by tying yarn on sticks or stringing up rocks and pinecones from branches. There are logs to climb and forts to explore – it’s an outdoor-lover’s haven.

Jason is afraid of heights so I made him take Lena up the tree house. It’s called challenging your spouse – I’m here for him, folks. Lena was fearless as usual and wanted to climb through the railing. I love that about her. Meanwhile, down below, I was assuring Melissa that the large flying bugs were not out to get her and reminding her to try and breathe. The woman HATES bugs with a passion and while I shouldn’t laugh, I can’t help but crack up when she breaks into a sprint to escape the winged creatures.

Despite it only being their second day in the country and suffering from horrible colds, the Carlsson’s were troopers and claimed no effect from jet lag. However, after a full day of exploring medieval churches and magical forests, they did fall into a sleep coma by 8pm. Vacations are tough work.
