Wicken Fen

We love visiting National Trust sites. Admission of this fact could qualify me as one of two things: I’m either becoming a proper Brit or I’m morphing into an 80-year-old version of myself. Either way, I’m fine with it because these places really do make for a nice day out. Despite living here for a year and a half, we still hadn’t visited Wicken Fen despite it being really close to our house. So one day after church, we decided to take a little family stroll. Much of the park was under water due to large amounts of rain we’ve had recently so we just stuck to the boardwalk areas. Still, it didn’t disappoint.

We have a number of¬†windmills dotting the villages in East Suffolk so Lena has become quite the eagle eye at spotting them and pointing them out. Even though this one was out of commission, she still made sure everyone within a mile radius knew of it’s presence as well as her own.

Side note: I enjoy looking at this man. He’s easy on the eyes.

There was quite a bit of water on either side of the boardwalk so we spent a lot of time hunting for fish and other creatures. I don’t know that we actually spotted anything but we did some serious searching nevertheless.

Lena spotted some birds overhead as well as some airplanes. She thinks that every plane in the sky belongs to Jason and tells us, “Wook! Daddy tet!” Also known as “Look, Daddy’s jet!” (in case you don’t speak toddler)

The moss was really pretty and such a bright green against the black walkway. I liked how it formed a star-like pattern.

We got a little lost at one point and this was also the time Lena announced she needed to pee. This was one of our first attempts at peeing outside the confines of her comfy Minnie Mouse seat and let’s just say it didn’t go well. I bought a portable potty that folds out with a little plastic bag for when you’re on the go and need a wee. Well, apparently I didn’t quite snap it all the way in place¬†because as soon as I plopped Lena on, it collapsed and she lost her mind. So the last part of the walk was spent trying to calm her down and praying that she didn’t pee all over herself in the middle of the cold, English wetlands. I like to live life on the edge and didn’t have a spare change of clothes. Two mom points for me.

We’re excited to go back once the weather’s a bit nicer. You can take a boat ride through parts of the fen as well as explore the nature trail (when it’s not under water). I think Lena will really enjoy that and anytime we’re outside for a large portion of the day, it usually means I’m rewarded with Lena taking an extra long nap and early bedtime. Also known as Mama can watch Netflix and eat ice cream in peace. Just being honest.
